If sunnier climes are tempting you, perhaps Crete could be the answer you are looking for.

Crete has a lot to offer as a holiday destination and you can certainly get away from it all here and enjoy some peace and quiet if you want to get away from the madding crowds. If it’s not long nights partying or clubbing you want to have, steer clear of the more popular venues and try somewhere quieter on another part of the island.

It can be a good idea to start looking in terms of your accommodation first of all. For example you can see whether you can find any hotels that have a honeymoon suite. Alternatively you might look for a spa hotel or somewhere that has facilities you could use while you are there. Spa treatments or a gym might be at the top of your list for example, so bear them in mind.

The trick is to gauge what kind of honeymoon you want before you do anything else. Crete can cater for all kinds of people and holiday desires, so the chances are good that you will be able to book your dream honeymoon here whatever kind of break you would like to have. But remember that it is all in the planning, and whatever time of year you want to go, you’ll get just the right honeymoon by thinking through everything in advance.

Some companies even specialise in providing Crete based honeymoon packages, but don’t be tempted to go down the easy route. Sometimes you will only get the ideal honeymoon you both want by exploring all the options and then booking exactly what you need by yourselves. Whichever route you decide to take though, if it brings you to Crete you’re bound to have a memorable time.

Agios Nikolaos – Is It Right For You?

Agios Nikolaos is one of those places in Crete that most people will be familiar with. It is a popular area with many tourists, who either stay here or nearby. But the question is whether it is going to be the ideal place for you to stay if you are planning a holiday in Crete.

Agios Nikolaos can be found on the northern edge of the island. Heraklion is off to the west of it and Sitia is much closer in the east. The area has many villages dotted around it, which are ideal if you want a taste of what real Greek islands are all about. You may be able to find some accommodation in one of those villages that would appeal to you greatly.

Many would say that the area around Agios Nikolaos tells you more about real authentic Greek islands than any of the tourist hubs you could visit. While the area is known for attracting tourists it has largely retained an authentic feel.

One of the more popular and familiar areas in Agios Nikolaos is its lake. If you are looking for somewhere to wander and take in the scenery, you couldn’t really pick better than this. The lake even boasts an open air theatre nearby, so you might find a day out for a stroll turns into something even more appealing.

Another area worth exploring is the port. Along its sides you will find cafes and many other similar venues where you can stop and shade yourself from the sun. Refreshing drinks and snacks are available here and you can enjoy watching people moving around the port, going about their business or enjoying their holiday.

The area can be crowded during the height of the summer season, but it is arguably worth visiting all year round. Agios Nikolaus is also a place of many faces, appealing to all kinds of different people for different reasons. So even if you have never been before and you are wondering if it would suit you, the chances are the answer would be a definite yes.

Great Beaches on the Eastern Side of Crete

Make no mistake – Crete is one of those islands you visit if you want to see some serious amounts of sand to lie down on every day. It’s something of a party island too of course, but there is arguably nothing better than relaxing on a beach you have come all this way to see.

Crete itself is split into four main areas. From left to right, west to east, these are Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lassithi. We’re going to find out what kinds of beaches are on offer in Lassithi, in the far eastern stretches of Crete.

The good news is that there are beaches dotted right along almost every part of the coastline around this end of the island. Some of them, from Agios Nikolaos to Pachia Ammos, are fairly close together, peppering the coastline one after the other and tempting you in lots of different ways. In other places there are more pronounced gaps between the beaches. Mochlos beach and Sitia beach are both on the northern reaches of this end of the island, but there is some distance separating them in this case.

Let’s head to the southern reaches of the eastern end of Crete now though, and see what is on offer at Kakkos Bay beach. This is indeed a sweeping bay that gives you virtually everything you could want scenically speaking from a great beach. It is not quite as built up as the beach you will find at Lerapetra a little further west, but it gives you a quieter and more relaxed feel for sure.

As you can see there is a big mix of beaches in the Lassithi area of Crete. Agios Nikolaos is probably one of the most well known of them all. But if you are staying on the island for a week or more you should make the effort to explore one or two others as well. You may stumble across one that you like better for some reason, and this is without venturing anywhere else on the island. You will certainly be sure to find something you love.

Rethymno – Not the Best Known Town in Crete

Some places in Crete will be better known to you than others. When it comes to Rethymno you may not have heard of it at all, despite it being the third biggest on the island. But it is certainly worth exploring because it has a lot to share and show you.

Rethymno is on the northern edge of the island, not far from Koubes and Misiria. It is known for its beauty and when you see it for yourself you will realise why. The harbour here is quite delightful and amazing to view, and it is a key part of the town itself. Many people come here to see the boats and watch the amazing blue skies act as a backdrop to the beauty they find. This may all sound very dramatic. But when you see the harbour in Rethymno and the beautiful buildings that surround it, it will suddenly become very obvious why the town is much loved among all those who see it.

The harbour is surrounded by older buildings and the Venetian quarters here are much sought after by those who visit the town. This is one of those occasions when you will love to have your camera close at hand, because you will find yourself using it a lot.

One of the main attractions in Rethymno is not a place or a location. It is the history and story that the town has to share with us. The town is known as a big cultural spot and it just goes to show that Crete is much more than just a party island with great beaches. It’s good to have a great night out and enjoy the beaches during the day, but it is also nice to learn a little about the island from towns like Rethymno.

You can stay here of course for the duration of the time you are in Crete. You will find the obligatory beautiful beaches here too, plus a lot of places to go at night. But this is just scratching the surface of the depth and the history you can discover in Rethymno.

What Should You Expect From Heraklion?

Heraklion – sometimes seen referred to as Iraklion too – is well known as one of the major cities Crete has to offer. It also acts as the capital of the island, and many holidaymakers coming to Crete fly into the major airport in Heraklion.

But is it the kind of city you should fly into and drive out of to get to your actual holiday destination, or is it worth hanging around to see what else is on offer?

In truth Heraklion is steeped in history and it has a lot to share with you. The history of the city goes back hundreds and hundreds of years. No matter how long you spend there you would probably only scratch the surface of the amount of knowledge you could conceivably learn about the city.

The city also has signs of various passages in its history to share with you. For example one of the most notable Venetian buildings Heraklion has is the Venetian loggia. This dates back to the 1620s.

This is one of the most fascinating things about the city. At every turn you will see buildings dating from a different era. Some may be hundreds of years old, like the Venetian building for example, while others may be just a few decades old. It all combines to create a truly amazing city that is forever able to show you something new.

One thing you should be prepared for if you are spending some time in Heraklion is the noise. Since the airport is close by and planes are forever taking off and landing, you can imagine how this increases the noise level in the city. No doubt you would get used to it eventually, but it may not make a holiday spent solely in the area a quiet and relaxing opportunity.

Heraklion has so much to offer that it is worth researching it a bit before you visit. This will save you wasting time wondering where to go first when you actually get there. It will also mean you can make the most of every minute you are there.

Visiting The Crete Aquarium

Crete is a top holiday destination among those who love beaches and having a great time at various clubs and bars. But there is more to the island than just the fun loving side. There is much to be learned from some of the attractions here as well.

For instance if you decide to take the whole family on a holiday to Crete, be sure you don’t miss the aquarium there. Known as the Cretaquarium, you will find it on the Crete North Coast Road. Heraklion is not far out to the west of the aquarium and the good news is that you won’t be far from a nice beach when you visit either.

The aquarium is hard to miss from the outside, and you will find yourself walking across a watery area as you move into the building. Here there awaits a tour of the deep and many fish and other denizens of the deep – be prepared to see some amazing sights!

You will need to look closely in order to see all the fish and other creatures that lurk within. Some of them are very closely coloured according to their surroundings, so beware of the possibility of looking right at them and not spotting them if you’re not careful. Scorpion fish and spiny lobsters are just two of the examples of the life that is here in the aquarium, and there is much else besides to watch out for.

As you can see this might be the kind of venue that will attract the kids, but it has every reason to fascinate the adults as well. Some of the creatures you can see here will not be visible to you any other way – you are not likely to see them in the ocean for example. It is one of the best ways to introduce yourself to forms of life that would otherwise remain unknown to you.

The Cretaquarium is a superbly created and fascinating day out for the whole family, regardless of age. There are some stunning examples of life here that will remain with you for a long time to come.

The Ruins Of Knossos

If you are going to do some exploring while you are in Crete, it pays to go to places other than the local bars and beaches – even though they may well be worth a visit.

You should definitely make time to see Knossos, because this is one of the key sights in Crete that takes you back in time to another place altogether. Knossos also takes the name of Labyrinth, which should give you an idea of what to expect once you get there. The location itself is considerable in size and dates back as far as the Bronze Age. The mixture of rooms, pathways and other structures here is quite something and well worth taking the time off from the beach to see it.

It has been over a century since the ruins were first discovered. Since then Knossos has become something of a symbol of Crete, showing the immense history the island. There is also a Minoan palace here, which is thought by many to be where the legend of the Minotaur comes from. Do you remember the story of the Minotaur and the maze? Once you have visited the ruins of Knossos and its palace, perhaps you will see where the legend came to life.

There is no doubt that just walking around the area will give you goosebumps. Just think of all the people who walked through these same areas hundreds of years ago before you. If you are staying in or near Heraklion you won’t have any trouble finding Knossos, since it is very close by.

While the palace and ruins of Knossos may be famous for the Minotaur legend, they are also famous as being the seat of civilisation in the whole of Europe. The Minoans lived and worked here long before any other people made their mark anywhere else, and this makes it a hugely important site. We should thank the person who eventually uncovered it all those years ago, so we can see what our ancestors would have done on a daily basis a long time before that. Make sure you don’t miss it for anything.

Why Try Falasarna?

No matter how many times you may have visited Crete before now, you may not be familiar with the name Falasarna. This is because it is hardly one of the key places on the island – not if you want a lively time with lots of bars and restaurants to choose from anyway.

However if you would prefer to get away from the madding crowd to see what is on offer elsewhere, you should definitely give Falasarna a try. This is an ancient town and much of it is in ruins. This in itself gives Falasarna a haunting quality that cannot be surpassed anywhere else in Crete.

What’s more the area is being excavated so more ancient ruins can be discovered. Over time we may learn more about what the area was like many centuries ago, but until then we can still discover a lot about it simply by taking a day to tour the area.

Make sure you book a car for this purpose though. While you can get to Falasarna in other ways this is undoubtedly the best one of all. You can take your time and explore different parts of the area, and arrive and leave whenever the mood takes you. It is ideal to pack a picnic and everything you need for a day on the beach and head out there early to make the most of the day ahead.

Basically you should expect a good beach and plenty of ruins. This is why we suggest packing everything you might need into the car with you – there are no nearby shops or restaurants you can head to for a spot of lunch. This is a strictly al fresco kind of affair!

You might think it sounds a little understated and there could be hardly any point in going there. But if you yearn for some peace and quiet and lots of beach to yourself, this is the best place to get it in the whole of Crete. You can still try other areas and livelier places on other days, but Falasarna can provide you with the retreat you are really after.

Chania – A City Worth Seeing

If you are planning on visiting Crete this year, make a point of seeing some of the cities it has to show you as well as heading for the beaches. Crete is a great island to visit if you want nightlife and long stretches of sand to relax on, but it also has another side that is well worth seeing too.

Take Chania for example. This city is located on the northern coast of Crete and thus has the advantage of giving you nice views of the waterfront as well as all the delights you would expect from a Greek city.

And this is certainly one of the best ones to visit. The waterfront here draws many tourists to it every day during the height of the season, and when you see it for yourself you will see why. This city has two distinct parts to it, the old town and the modern city. The old town is by far the most attractive part of Chania itself, even though it suffered greatly during the Second World War. Bombing destroyed many parts of it but much of it still remains today to be viewed with wonder.

The harbour is a wonderful place to visit to see the port and the many boats that sit there bobbing on the water. This is the Venetian Harbour, and while it has seen better days there is a certain style and attraction in every inch of it. This is definitely the place to sit and relax with a cool drink or a bite to eat as you watch the locals of Chania wander by.

Most of the locals actually work in the newer part of the city, so you might feel you have lots of tourists surrounding you rather than anyone else. But this should not put you off seeing everything that Chania has to offer, which is quite a lot.

Chania is also a county, so you will find plenty of nice beaches not far from the city itself. In fact you could definitely choose this as a nice base for your holiday in Crete if you wish.

A Day Trip To Spinalonga

This delightfully named island is just off the coast of Crete. The best way to reach it – and certainly the most enjoyable – is to get on a boat bound for the island so you can enjoy the view as you make the crossing. This gives you a unique opportunity to take some pictures of Crete as you leave the mainland, as well as taking pictures of the approaching island.

This used to be a leper colony in another life, but it now provides a wonderful venue for a day away from the main part of Crete. Spinalonga is now a deserted island in the sense that no one actually lives there any more. But all the buildings that were in use throughout its time as a leper colony (and previous to this as well) are still there. The buildings are not in the best condition but they certainly add to the haunted feeling you’ll get when you arrive there.

The best way to see as much of the island as possible is to book yourself onto a guided tour. This works well because you will see and learn more than you could on your own. The tour guides are exceptionally knowledgeable and will tell you all those small details and stories that help bring the island and its previous inhabitants back to life.

One interesting fact you may not be aware of is that Spinalonga was not an island originally. It used to be a part of Crete itself, but the process of turning into an island was not a natural one. The Venetians who lived on the island at the time decided to effectively cut it off by getting rid of that portion of the land mass that connected Spinalonga with the rest of Crete. Ever since those events took place, the island has been just that – an island.

As you can see, a boat trip to Spinalonga is a great way to while away a few hours. You can take your position on the tour and then spend some time exploring the island by yourself as well. Make sure you reach its heights so you can get the good views obtainable from the very top.

Pick A Top Beach On Crete

Crete is all about the nightlife and the sunbathing. But regardless of whether you are going in for the nightlife or not you still have to make sure you choose a great beach to enjoy every day you are there.

So where shall we start? Georgioupoli Beach is a good place to start, and you’ll find it dotted with plenty of beach umbrellas. It can be crowded so it is advisable to get there early, but you’ll appreciate being able to take a dip in the sea and having a bite to eat in one of the nearby bars or restaurants.

Elsewhere you could opt for the beautifully named Sweetwater Beach. If sunbathing naked is your thing you’ll be pleased to know this beach does allow it. You can also keep your swimming costume, bikini or trunks on if you wish though. There is a lovely taverna here that is reached by crossing a little bridge over the rocks too. If you want to go naked you should make your way to the opposite end of the beach to where the taverna is.

Elafonisi Beach is loved by many holidaymakers as well. This is at the far western end of the island and it has delightful white and pink sand to walk on. The sand is this colour due to the large number of shells that have been washed onto the shore and trodden down over the years.

The best part of this particular beach is that it has islands nearby. But thanks to the shallow waters you can actually walk out to them through the water itself. This makes for a more unusual beach experience and it’s no wonder this area is very popular with a lot of new and returning holidaymakers to Crete.

Choosing the right beach will depend on the kind of holiday you want to have. For example you can choose to go for a nudist beach if you are visiting alone, or you could visit a family orientated beach with the whole family. Whatever you opt for, the beaches of Crete have a lot to offer.

Get Your Walking Boots On For The Samaria Gorge

You might have sunbathing and relaxing high on your list for your holiday in Crete, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But it is good to see some of the scenery as well, and there is nothing better in this respect than the Samaria Gorge.

This really does have to be seen to be believed, and since it is the longest gorge in the whole of Europe there is a lot here to explore. Be sure you have a camera with plenty of memory or film in it – you’ll be snapping shots left, right and centre the whole time.

Pack your hiking boots too, because this isn’t exactly the kind of area you would head to for a casual stroll. It is around sixteen kilometres from start to finish, although you don’t have to tackle the whole thing if you don’t want to. The good news is that you cannot get lost along the gorge, because the powers that be have made sure there are plenty of signs telling you where to go. Take plenty of water with you for starters, although you can top up at specific points along the way. You will see a lot of other people walking along the gorge too, as it is quite famous in the whole of Greece and not just in Crete itself.

There is a lot to see during the hike as well. There is a cypress tree along the route which has apparently been standing for around two thousand years. Elsewhere the gorge gets narrower and you will go between the two cliff faces either side of you. It’s quite an experience and not one that is easily forgotten after any length of time.

Most people who have walked the gorge (and also have some local knowledge) will say that an early start is usually best. Not only will you avoid the worst of the midday heat, you can also beat most of the other tourists to the gorge as well. And when you have the place virtually to yourself it is even more stunning than you would believe.

The Many Wonders Of The Botanical Park Of Crete

When you think about visiting Crete the first thing to come into your mind probably has nothing to do with visiting a botanical park. But in fact this should definitely be on your top ten list of things to do while you are on the island, because it truly is a wonder worth seeing.

The Botanical Park of Crete is not too far from Chania, and it is fairly easy to reach. Once you are there you will have a full twenty hectares to explore – which is only just short of fifty acres. It is packed with flora and fauna of all different kinds, and you will see the delights that are ready to awaken your sense around every corner.

Some people who come to the island frequently end up coming for repeat visits over the course of a year. And when this occurs they see that the park looks different on every occasion. As new plants grow and older ones develop through the seasons, you can enjoy something different with every step you take.

Back in 2004 the valley in which the Botanical Park of Crete exists was swept away by a fire. This sad event was actually the catalyst for the park itself to come into being – and you can still see memorials to that fire today when you visit the park. These come in the form of trees that were burned and then left standing as a reminder of what happened here just a few short years ago.

There is plenty more to enjoy too, such as the lake beside which you will find plenty of fruit trees growing. And with ducks, geese and perhaps even a peacock to look out for, you’ll have an active day out even without all the walking you will be doing.

And when you have tired of all the walking you will be glad to know you have a restaurant to visit to replenish your energy supplies. Simply sit down and enjoy the view around you as you enjoy the hospitality offered by the Botanical Park of Crete.

Experience Aquaworld In Crete

With a name like Aquaworld you will have a pretty good idea of what you will find there. Aquaworld is located in Hersonissos in Crete, and it packs plenty into a great day out for the family.

It is open from the beginning of April to the end of October, so whatever time you visit during the brighter summer months of the year you will find it open and waiting to welcome you.

The great thing about Aquaworld is that it gives you the opportunity to see lots of the marine mammals and fish that are out there in the seas around Crete itself. They won’t all be there but if you don’t like snorkelling or diving, this is the next best thing to be able to see them up close.

The scorpion fish is one such example that you really wouldn’t want to come up close to in the waters around Crete. As the name suggests it has a nasty sting on offer if you did get too close – although the sting is not in the tail on this occasion. Instead it comes from the spines which run along the length of its back. It isn’t fatal but you certainly would want to avoid it!

The dusky grouper is another fish worth looking out for, but we can’t guarantee what sex it will be when you visit. This is because it is born female and then changes into a male when she is twelve. It sounds bizarre but then this is a good description of some of the fish you will see here. They may well be very different from anything you have seen in an aquarium before.

You can also see crocodiles and even snakes at the aquarium, so if you have an aversion to them you might want to miss that section out! There is plenty to see and learn here though, so the kids will get a lot out of it.

Whenever you next head to Crete make sure you add Aquaworld to your list of things to do. You’ll love what it has to show you.

Plan A Trip To The Limnoupolis Water Park In Crete Next Summer

Crete is one of those destinations where you’ll find yourself in shorts and a t-shirt for most of your holiday. Even when you head away from the beach to do something else for the day, the weather will dictate a minimal amount of clothing.

But you might want to grab your swimming costume or trunks once you discover the Limnoupolis Water Park. The park is in Chania, which is over to the west of Crete on its northern coast. But while water is a key theme at the park you won’t be sampling the delights of the sea.

Instead you can look forward to tubes, slides and plenty of fun with the whole family – which is the main reason you should head to the park. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you’ll find yourself regressing to a kid as soon as you hit the water!

So what can you expect to enjoy during your day at the park? Well there is the Black Hole for starters – a long dark water slide that takes you down a hillside in the dark before splashing you down in a pool at the bottom. Do you have the nerve to try it though? The so called Kamikaze ride is equally as challenging – a steep water chute with no twists or turns. Sounds okay doesn’t it? You might think twice once you have tried it! Steep is the keyword here and you will pick up more speed lying down than you might think.

The Giant Slide is great for everyone because you get to sit in a huge inflatable tyre. This is out in the open too so you can soak up the sun’s rays and enjoy the view on the way down. It’s a bit more sedate if you’ve tried the Kamikaze already and you want something more laid back.

And the Lazy River is just that – lazy! Once you’ve tired yourself out you can grab an inflatable tyre and sit back in it as you gradually make your way down 260 metres of river. What better way could there be to enjoy a great day out in Crete?

The Hottest Locations For Holidays in Greece

When talking about the greatest holiday destinations, there is no doubt that Greece would be mentioned. Aside from the mysterious and fascinating Greek mythologies, it is also rich in various hot locations where you could spend the rest of your holiday. If you would like to take a trip to Greece, make sure that you go to all the hottest locations in the country to have a vacation that you will not soon forget.

First stop is the city of Athens. Everyday, there are hundreds of tourists visiting the staggering city of Athens, particularly in Acropolis. If you are a fan of skyscrapers and other fascinating modern structures, you will surely appreciate the architecture that can be found here in Acropolis. Moreover, the city of Athens is also known for the military ceremony when the guards change their shifts. This can be seen at the residence of the president of the country. Aside from that, you will also get to enjoy Athens at night, especially if you are an avid fan of night clubs, bars, and the like. Because of the activities that can be done here in Athens, some people opt not to leave the city and spend the rest of their holiday here.

Another popular tourist destination here in Greece is the Thessaloniki. Just like Athens, foreign visitors also rush to the Thessaloniki because of the amazing architecture, particularly the Byzantine churches. These religious sites are considered by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Sites all over the world. In this city, you may also visit the archeological museum. Be prepared to be amazed with the huge collection of jewellery that serves as the remains of the Macedonian era. Moreover, you can also find antique as well unique marble statues here in Thessaloniki.

You will probably get tired with all the walking and sightseeing you'll be doing here in Greece. Therefore, to experience relaxation, fun, and the best of the country, you should not forget to hit the Greek islands for some sun, sand, and sparkling waters. There are different tropical islands here in Greece, including the infamous Santorini and Crete. Several water sports activities can be enjoyed on these islands, such as scuba diving, parasailing, wind surfing, and more. And because of the unspoiled environment within reach, you may also partake in some hiking and trekking as well.

You don't have to sulk in your hotel room once the night strikes in Greece. In Mykonos, you can jump from one club to another until the wee hours of the morning. The nightlife here in Mykonos is vibrant and you relax (or party!) in all kinds of nightclubs, trendy bars, fine dining restaurants and of course, luxurious hotels. And with all the beautiful people that you will find during your holiday, you would think that the Greek Gods and Goddesses came down to Earth just to party.

For more information click here

Matala, Crete Makes "Most Unusual Beaches" List

One of my favorite funky spots in Greece has been included in the Sydney Morning Herald's "Most Unusual Beaches" list - Matala, Crete.

Like Mykonos, Matala seems to be one of those places visitors either love or hate - on the "love" side put ancient Minoans, a few Phoenicians, ancient Romans, Egyptians, and seafarers from a few other cultures, all joined by the hippie explosion in the sixties and early seventies. Then, luminaries like Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens inhabited the caves pocking the sandstone cliffs - apparently not minding that their beachfront apartments were once tombs.

On the other side, there are those that say it's too crowded, too touristy, too lively. For me? At the moment, the only thing wrong with Matala is that it's just too far away.

For more information click here

Lifestylers go crazy for Crete

Crete has not been especially fashionable in recent years, but that may all be about to change.

Inland from 1,000km of coastline, there are ancient sites, gorges and villages which are little changed in centuries. Only one place - Malia - has a reputation for the excesses of cheap package-tourism.

But investors have found the double-digit property rises of Cyprus, Turkey or Morocco more attractive than the steady increases in Crete, which is nearer Libya than Athens.

Oonagh Karanjia of Crete Property Consultants, noted: "People have always bought in Crete because they love the lifestyle and the fact that flipping [selling a newbuild property on quickly for profit] doesn't work here".

"Many buyers still want the traditional village house, although the past few years have seen much new development. The low cost of living is attracting would-be Spanish purchasers and Easyjet's take-over of GB Airways' Gatwick-Heraklion route gives people the impression that Crete is more accessible."

Little Britain?

The long, sandy beaches and lusher north-west of Crete has attracted most of the tourism, and newbuild complexes have mushroomed west of Heraklion, the island's capital and main airport, around the towns of Chania and Apokoronos - nicknamed "Little Britain".

But in the drier east, the topography of mountains dropping into the sea has restricted mass development and the area around Elounda and the regional centre of Aghios Nikolaos is associated with small, upmarket projects.

It doesn't have the expat population of, say, Chania, and while it can be too quiet during winter for full-time residents, villa owners no doubt love its comparative isolation.

However, that remoteness may be about to change as the area becomes more accessible, with the extension of the island's new main road - cutting the journey to Elounda to 40 minutes from Heraklion airport - and a new airport mooted at Sitia could open up the far east of the island.

A fantastic opportunity

Some newbuild properties are now selling for 10 times the average cost of a typical stone house, but will buyers consider Crete a luxury destination?

John Batty, of Greek property specialist Aegean Blue, commented: "A market is being created. People who have never considered buying in Crete before are realising it is a fantastic opportunity. It is good value compared with other EU countries."

For more information click here

The Spectacular gorges of Crete

There are many ways to enjoy "The Great Island" known as Crete, but if you are a relatively healthy and active person, the most enjoyable and memorable experiences will be find in hiking the spectacular gorges or exploring the island during long walks. On an island where there are six mountain ranges, five "walking centres," and an excellent network of busses, your choices of wonderful adventures on foot are vast and varied.

Those who come to Crete to "do the gorges" are fond of asking those who are less adventuresome, "Well, if you don't plan to walk the Samaria gorge, then why are you here?"

There are many gorges on the mountainous island of Crete, but the Samaria in Western Crete is the iconic gorge of Crete and, indeed, the most spectacular. It is in a protected, National Park and is open only between May and October. Its altitude is over 4,00 feet and a river, replenished by spring water and melted snow, runs through it. The gorge is wild, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. Those who have walked this gorge have earned their bragging rights.

The walk through Samaria Gorge begins at Omalos and ends at the beach in Agia Roumeli, a length of approximately eighteen kilometers. Most visitors travel in groups and leave by bus from Chania to Omalos and, when the hike ends in Agia Roumeli, they take a ferry to Chora Sfakion where the bus is ready for the trip back to Chania.

Tour operators recommend a leisurely pace with pauses for picture-taking and admiring the spectacular scenery, including lakes, waterfalls, and many flora, flowers and herbs. Hikers may even see the Cretan wild goat known as a "kri kri." If this advice is followed, the journey from beginning to end will be approximately six to seven hours. Some dare-devils try to set records by literally running through the gorge and one must be on the look-out and avoid being in the way of these dangerous folk.

Most visitors come on organized tours, but some will come to Omolas the day before, stay overnight, and begin the adventure when it opens at 7am. The Omalos plateau is beautiful and serene and staying there overnight and watching the sun set can be a very special, almost transcendental experience. There are a number of small hotels in Omolas and some owners will drive hikers to the ticket kiosk in the morning. Many people find this to be the best way to experience the Samaria Gorge.

Another way to enjoy the gorge, if a long hike downward is not to your liking, or if your knees will not permit it, is to start at the village of Agia Roumeli and pace yourself by walking up as far as you would like and then returning to the village.

Some people choose not to go down the Samaria Gorge, but to go up to the summit of Gingilos, a height of 1980 metres. It is a popular mountain walk that starts from the entrance to the Samaria gorge and the views are superb. The Libyan sea is on the south and the peaks of the White Mountains are readily visible.

For more information click here

Cretaquarium - A Crete Tours Destination

You can decide to visit several other places, apart from visiting the Greek heritage sites, while buying your Crete tours package. The Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos complex, a state-of-the-art sea water aquarium is one such place among several others, which you could decide to add to you Crete tours itinerary.

The aquarium works as a modern-day research, educational and entertainment facility for those seeking to learn about the Mediterranean sea-life. Researchers and holidaymakers are known to throng this place in good numbers throughout the year. Cretans are known to have been living alongside the ocean since the Minoan era, and it is fitting that a state-of-the-art aquarium should be added to your Crete tours plan.

The Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos was opened in December 2005 at a former US army base in Gournes, Crete and it immediately became a key ingredient for the seekers of Crete tours. The aquarium, which has been funded under the EEA Financial Mechanism by Norway and part of 29 similar projects, has been able to draw more than 100,000 visitors by this time. Greek holidays have always had a fair bit of sea adventure attached with them, since most archeological sites are spread across several islands apart from the mainland Greece. Those who may decide to buy their share of Crete tours will also find themselves yachting and visiting the Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos .

The aquarium is designed to have room for 300 visitors at any given period of time during your Crete tours, and could be visited throughout the year, including all public and religious holidays. Either your tour operator that might have sold you a Crete tours package or the local guide will help you reach out there. The Minoan Civilization, which is believed to have flourished across the Greek island of Crete, is known to have depended heavily on seafaring for its livelihood. According to some experts, the occurrence of the Thera volcanic eruption only a tad earlier before the Minoan Civilization fell apart, was the chief cause for its annihilation. Minoans heavily suffered in the area of sea trade due to this natural calamity, it is believed.

You could choose to see ancient wall painting, showcasing an inherent connection between the Minoans and aquatic life, while being on your Crete tours. The paintings will also show how seafaring the Minoans were, by depicting their action packed life style. While being inside the Cretaquarium, you could watch up to four thousand marine organisms through various methods. The aquarium is made to accommodate these organisms within specially designed and fabricated tanks, filled with an estimated amount of 1.6 million litres of seawater. Visitors can watch these species through glass and acrylic windows, while being on their Crete tours.

Some very small organisms, such as eggs and larva, are displayed through a large screen, which the visitors can decide to manipulate themselves. The aquarium, built over an area of 5000 m2, has several ingredients to add to your Crete tours. For example, you can sip coffee at two different places and spend time chatting at the central meeting point. More information could be garnered about the Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos complex either online or through your Crete tours guide.

For more information click here

Towns For Your Crete Sightseeing

Planning out any Cretan holiday can be a challenging job due to the sheer number of available options. There are several towns of significance, each having an abundance of modern infrastructure, archeological richness and natural beauty. You can choose any of these towns for your Crete Sightseeing, depending on your personal choice.

Among these towns is Heraklion, the capital and the largest city of Crete. The city accounts for roughly about 15% of all arrivals into Greece through its international airport and consists of a flourishing hotel industry to add comfort to your Crete sightseeing. Heraklion is also where the Minoan archeological site called the Knossos Palace stands.

Chania is the next town for Crete sightseeing after Heraklion. With an official population of around 70,000 in the greater Chania, this second largest city of Crete has several tourist attractions to look around for. The city is roughly divided into two major elements, viz. the old and the new towns. The old one sprawls around the harbor area and carries one of the best ancient settings for holiday making in Greece and elsewhere. The town used to be encircled by the old Venetian fortifications, some of which survive even today adding to your Crete sightseeing plans. If the old town had spas, cafes and other recreational facilities carved out of the old heritage buildings, the new one will surprise you with its modern setting.

One could choose from a number of archeological places in Chania to add to one's Crete sightseeing. Most of these places lie in Kasteli, Splantzia, Halidon street, at the harbor, in Topanas and the Jewish quarter. The combined tourist arrivals of the above two cities, i.e. Heraklion and Chania, form a decent percentage of the entire Greek tourism. Rethymno is another town, which could be added to one's Crete sightseeing flavors. The town has a population of roughly 40,000 and a past dating back to antiquity. The old part of Rethymno, built during the Venetian era, is among the best preserved sites of its kind in today's Crete.

Archeological remains have withstood the change of time, weather and man's interference in Rethymno, to continue being listed along the best Crete sightseeing locations. These included buildings and harbor from the Venetian period, and stoned staircases and arched doorways from the Hellenic-Roman and Byzantine era. The city has a Venetian castle named the Fortezza, which is one of the largest and most preserved of its kind in the whole of Crete. One more town for Crete sightseeing is Ierapetra in the eastern Crete. It holds a population of about 24,000 and is widely known for its Greek, Roman and Venetian lineages.

Agios Nikolaos is another Crete sightseeing location, which lies east to Heraklion and is widely known for its tourism potential. The town plays a regional hub for 20 odd villages and is well connected through Nikos Kazantzakis airport with the mainland Greece and the European cities. The city is widely believed to have been inhabited since the Bronze period. Crete sightseeing locations within Agios Nikolaos include, the Lake Voulismeni, the island Agioi Pantes, beaches along the coastal region, the local archaeological museum and one key flora exhibition "Iris".

For more information click here

Top 10 Mediterranean islands in the sun

Craving a sun-and-sea summer holiday destination where you can also party the night away? Travel website TripAdvisor has come up with a list of the top 10 islands in the Mediterranean sea.

"All of these islands offer pristine beaches and their own unique features," said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Michele Perry. "Our travelers have identified the hot islands in the Med this summer, especially if you want sun, sea and dancing all night."

1. Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus

Visit Aphrodite's birthplace in the eastern Mediterranean. Beaches are the draw for many visitors to the island, but so is the nocturnal activity with Ayia Napa being the town to party in. According to one TripAdvisor traveler: "We would have to say the Troodos Mountains were our highlight. You will know what we mean if you take the journey. Breathtaking!"

2. Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece

Corfu features a lush green landscape and serene, white beaches. Visit one of the Venetian fortresses, or relax under an olive tree, before enjoying the vibrant nightlife. According to one TripAdvisor traveler: "Nightlife in Corfu should just be called morning life."

3. Crete, Greece

As the former centre of the Minoan civilization, it's no wonder that Crete features a plethora of historical attractions including Knossos and Phaistos. Those in search of adventure on the largest Greek island can hike down Samaria Gorge for spectacular scenery. As one TripAdvisor traveler said: "Crete is an amazing place to explore ancient culture."

4. Santorini, Cyclades, Greece

In the south of the Aegean Sea, Santorini features dramatic cliffs overlooking a stunning caldera. Watch the breathtaking sunset in Fira, then head to the bars and nightclubs for an all-night extravaganza, emerging in time to view the sunrise.

5. Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

Perhaps best known for its nightlife, Mykonos attracts famous DJs and partygoers. Rejuvenate the next morning by strolling through the town and dining at a local tavern. As one TripAdvisor traveler commented: "Apart from the beaches, Mykonos is a place to dance all night long."

6. Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain

Visit the party capital of Ibiza and feel honored by joining the thousands of revelers at Privilege, the largest club in the world. Besides the vast nightlife, check out one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as God's Finger, a large rock at the entrance of Benirras Bay.

7. Sicily, Italy

The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has the three Cs - culture, cuisine and calm. Laden with orange and lemon orchards, the countryside boasts spectacular natural beauty, great for relaxing. One TripAdvisor traveler recommended: "If you are in Sicily, go on the sunset tour of Mount Etna. You can see the steaming ground and smell the sulphur."

8. Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

The largest island in Spain and part of the Balearic Islands, Majorca features mountainous terrain and beautiful beaches. Have a drink at the Abaco Bar housed in an old Majorcan manor house. As one TripAdvisor traveler put it: "Visit the Abaco bar - it's hidden behind giant wooden church-like doors, but inside it's a theatrical experience not to be missed!"

9. Capri, Campania, Italy

Off the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula, Capri is an island of magical scenery. Take a boat through the not-to-be-missed Blue Grotto, a beautiful sea cave, apparently once used by Roman emperors as a personal bath. According to one TripAdvisor traveler: "The calm sea makes it easy to get into the grotto through the cliff wall, and the sun shining gives the water the most beautiful blue colour."

10. Malta, Republic of Malta

Steeped in culture and history, Malta also features beautiful beaches and secluded coves, making the island feel like paradise. Stroll along Dingli Cliffs, watching the sunset at the highest area in Malta or visit the impressive Hypogeum temple featuring the sleeping Venus of Malta at the entrance.

For more information click here

Carnival of Colour in Crete

Holidaymakers jetting off to Crete next February should stop by the town of Rethymno for its annual carnival festivities.

Running over several days, the carnival kicks off on Shrove Tuesday with numerous live performances and feasts for all out in the open air, according to Whatsonwhen.

The festivities proceed with a host of children's activities, fancy dress parties, masquerade balls, treasure hunts, plays and dances, among other events.

Villages in the surrounding regions take to age-old celebrations and customs, while visitors to Crete will find themselves unable to resist the sumptuous local fare.

But the main attraction of the carnival, the Carnival Night Parade, outdoes everything else with crowds of revellers taking to the streets in a riotous explosion of sound, colour and costumes, and makes the trip to Crete worth it for just this night.

Chania

Chania is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania Prefecture. It is both a pastime and a relaxing pleasure.

Whether your choice is a small friendly taverna or a larger more elegant restaurant the way to do it is to take time, relax and enjoy. Take time out to converse with friends, sit at local cafes and people watch or enjoy a family meal together. The cuisine itself is really quite simple food, focusing on fresh meat, locally produced vegetables and seasoning.

Typical lunch dishes might included what is known as "mezedes" or as we may think of it, hors d'oeuvres. This is a charming town which attracts many visitors each year. For something completely different, visit the Venetian fortress at Spinalonga, a one time leper colony.

You will need longer to visit the ancient Minoan sites of Knossos Palace, Heraklion Museum and the Roman city of Gortys. Although April may have cooler nights and the sea will not be as warm, once May arrives, the sun comes out but not so many tourists.

July and August of course are the peak season months and in the larger resorts it can get very crowded and prices inevitably rise. However, the sea is wonderfully warm, as is the sunshine and you can avoid the crowds by staying in one of the smaller village resorts.

Popular Resorts on Crete

Aghios Nikolaos

Aghios Nikolaos is probably Crete's best known and established tourist resort and has changes from its beginnings as a fishing and shipping resort to a hive of activity in the summer months with lively cafes, bars and restaurants and its picturesque marina and lakeside.

Situated on the North East coast it is only 40 miles from Heraklion airport the resort measures just 2.5 miles from North to South and just 1 mile from East to West. The resort itself is clustered around and between the harbour and the picturesque and apparently 'bottomless' lake, juts into the town and is linked to the sea by a narrow canal. The coast road skirts the town with impressive, rugged mountains rising behind and olive groves carving a passage through to the south coast.

Rethymnon

Rethymnon was built in antiquity, even though it has never been a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain a mild urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town with two dolphins in a circle.

Rethymno started growing again when the Venetian conquerors of the island wanted to have an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania acquiring its own bishop and nobility. Today's old town (palia poli) is almost entirely built by Venetians. It is one of the best preserved old towns in Greece.

Today its main income is tourism, with large Facilities that have been built the past 20 years and Agriculture especially, for its olive oil and Mediterranean products. It is also the base of the Philosophical School and the University Library of the University of Crete.

Hania

Hania is the capital of the Prefecture of the same name and the second biggest town in Crete, with a population of 60.000 inhabitants. It is the administrative, economical, communications and commercial centre of the Prefecture.

Heraklion

Heraklion is the main city on the island of Crete and usually the starting point for visitors wishing to explore the island. The city, built on a fairly steep hillside, has a huge harbour to accommodate ferries and cruise liners, and an international airport. Heraklion is busy, bustling and full of hotels, fast food outlets, shops and traffic. The main square of Plateia Venizelou is a pedestrian mall sporting cafes and restaurants, with some fascinating shops in the surrounding streets.

Like many Greek cities Heraklion's architecture was influenced by Venetian occupation, and a Venetian fortress dominates the harbour. The city's pride and joy, though, is its archaeological museum, which contains the world's most comprehensive collection of artefacts from the Minoan civilisation, which flourished on Crete around 1,600 BC. Heraklion is close to the major archaeological site associated with the Minoans at Knossos.

Weather and Climate in Crete

The climate of Crete is quite varied due to the large altitudinal range on the island. Lowland areas are typically mediterranean, with summers which are hot and very dry. Winters are mild, seldom experiencing frosts, and are characterised by low pressure fronts which skirt to the north bringing warm air from the African coast.

Most of the rain falls during winter - especially in the mountains which are prone to localised thunderstorms and strong winds. However, much of the water drains quickly through the porous rocks into subterranean reservoirs.
